How to Care for Your Knitted Wire Nursery Décor

How to Care for Your Knitted Wire Nursery Décor

Your Knit & Knot piece has been crafted by hand, stitch by stitch, using high-quality wire and carefully chosen cotton yarn. Like any handmade heirloom, it rewards a little gentle care — and with the right handling, it will stay beautiful for years.

Handle with Gentle Hands

Wire is wonderfully sculptural, but it does have a memory. Once bent, it can be tricky to coax back to its original shape. When lifting or moving your piece, support it from the base or the widest point rather than pinching individual letters or sections. Avoid gripping tightly or applying pressure to delicate curves.

If small hands are nearby, display your piece somewhere out of reach. Our pieces are decorative items, not toys, and are not suitable for handling by young children.

Where to Display It

Most of our customers hang their pieces on a wall or rest them on a shelf. Both work beautifully — just keep a few things in mind:

  • Avoid damp or humid spots. Bathrooms and steamy kitchen walls are not ideal long-term homes for wire décor, as prolonged moisture can affect both the wire and the yarn over time.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight. Strong, sustained sunlight can cause yarn colours to fade gradually. A bright room is lovely; a sun-trap windowsill is less so.
  • Give it breathing room. Avoid pressing the piece flat against a rough surface, which can catch on the yarn fibres.

Hanging Your Piece

Each piece comes ready to hang. Use the loop or hanging point provided, and choose a hook or nail suited to the weight of your piece. If you are unsure, a small adhesive strip hook on a smooth, painted wall works well for lighter signs — but please do not apply adhesive directly to the wire or yarn itself, as removal can cause damage.

Make sure your hanging point is secure before letting go. A little wobble on first hang is normal; once settled, your piece should sit straight and steady.

Cleaning and Dusting

Dust happens. A very soft, dry cloth or a make-up brush is the kindest way to remove dust from the yarn and wire. Work gently and in one direction where possible, rather than scrubbing back and forth.

Avoid water, sprays, or cleaning products directly on your piece. If a small mark appears on the yarn, a barely-damp cloth dabbed (not rubbed) on the spot, then left to air dry fully, is usually sufficient.

Storing Your Piece Safely

If you ever need to store or transport your piece — perhaps after a nursery becomes a big-kid room, or when moving house — wrap it loosely in tissue paper or a soft cloth. Never stack heavy items on top of it, and avoid crushing it into a tight space. A flat, rigid surface underneath makes a good base for transit.

Made to Last

Every piece we make is built to be a keepsake. Whether it is hanging above a cot, decorating a playroom, or displayed long after your little one has grown, our wire décor is made to go the distance — with just a little love from you.
